What influence does a leading official hold in the hearts of the people? In Dongshan County, Fujian Province, two sayings illustrate this: “When I see the Casuarina tree, I think of Gu Wenchang” and “First worship Gu Gong, then honor our ancestors.”

President Xi Jinping has frequently praised Gu Wenchang, stating he was “dedicated to serving the people” and a “model of pragmatism.” Recently, during his visit to the Gu Wenchang Memorial, he urged leaders at all levels to learn from Gu, establish a correct view of achievements, and emphasize genuine efforts that benefit the community, ultimately earning a lasting place in the hearts of the people.

Gu Wenchang, former secretary of the Dongshan County Party Committee, made significant strides for the local community. He vowed, “If I cannot conquer the sandstorms, let the sand bury me,” and he led the people in constructing a “green Great Wall” along a 141-kilometer coastline, taming what was once deemed uncontrollable. This transformation uplifted the island and its residents. Even 43 years after his passing, the people of Dongshan remember him fondly.

“Comrades like Jiao Yulu, Yang Shanzu, and Gu Wenchang serve as excellent role models for county leaders.” Each name stands as a monument. Their stories are etched into the land they once fought to improve, and their legacies remain firmly rooted in the hearts of the people. Their sacrifices provide a clear lesson: the effectiveness of an official can often be gauged by the public’s appreciation.

A solid reputation is built on a genuine commitment to the people’s welfare. When holding office, officials must take action and deliver real results. This starts with establishing a proper perspective on achievements, clarifying whom the accomplishments benefit, the nature of these achievements, and how to pursue them effectively. Jiao Yulu struggled tirelessly, transforming the once barren land of Lankao into a verdant landscape. Yang Shanzu created the “Grain Depot of Western Yunnan” and, after retiring, dedicated himself to nurturing his hometown, leaving behind a flourishing oasis. They epitomized the ethic that “Communists serve the people.” Only by prioritizing the welfare of the populace can officials truly inspire and receive heartfelt praise.

A good reputation also stems from hands-on dedication and persistent effort. To ensure success, officials must fully understand “what matters to the people.” Is the heating effective during winter? Visit homes. Are public services user-friendly? Spend time in service centers. Are local agricultural products selling well? Walk through the fields. By fully engaging with the community, listening to their voices, and observing the realities, officials can find the best ways to serve the public and solve problems effectively. Committing to clear actions that yield tangible changes fosters unity between officials and the people.

A strong reputation results from perseverance and a commitment to long-term responsibility. Fulfilling the people’s needs requires visible achievements as well as foundational work. Generations of forest builders have turned what was once a barren desert into the largest man-made forest in the world; contemporary ‘Yugong’ Huang Dafa spent over 30 years leading efforts to carve a “lifeline” through cliffs, solving local water shortages. Like Gu Wenchang, they acted with foresight and consideration for future generations, making small contributions that yield lasting benefits. The public’s discernment is sharp, and time serves as a fair judge; only by cultivating an attitude of “success does not have to depend on me, but success must surely have my input” and maintaining the vision until the end can officials wield significant influence, leaving behind a legacy of honor.

In the balance of nature, the people’s perception serves as a measure. By upholding a sincere heart and adhering to their responsibilities for the public, officials can achieve meaningful results for both the Party and the people’s development, thus earning their unwavering support and affection.
